Serial Killers | Jack The Ripper

Jack The Ripper | Newspaper clipping from the era

The name still strikes fear in some people today, well over 100 years after the time of Jack The Ripper. Most of the murders credited to Jack The Ripper took place in late 1888. Some of these murders really were quite gruesome involving mutilation and evisceration. The investigation began in 1888 and was originally known as "The Whitechapel Murders" Although it is not really known how many victims The Ripper killed, most experts agree upon 5 as being the work of Jack.

These 5 victims were prostitutes and most had their throats slit. Jack The Ripper was not the first serial killer but the case was the first to create a worldwide media buzz. The media sensation resulted in thousands of letters being sent to the police and newspapers. Most of these letters offered advice on how to catch the killer and alot were just a hoax, however hundreds of these claimed to be from the killer himself and 3 of these letters attracted some attention from police and experts. The Dear boss letter, The Saucy Jacky postcard and The From hell letter.

The name Jack The Ripper was first used in The Dear boss letter to refer to the killer. Some believe the name was invented by the papers to sell more copies. The legend of "The Ripper" still lives on in London's East-End, with many guided tours of the murder sites. In 2006 Jack The Ripper was chosen by readers of the BBC History Magazine as the worst Briton In History.....Read More On Jack The Ripper
