Serial Killers | David Berkowitz - Son Of Sam

David Berkowitz | Son Of Sam | 44 Calibre Killer

David Richard Berkowitz is a serial killer who terrorized New York residents between 1976 and 1977. He is best known as "Son of Sam" and the ".44 Caliber Killer. Berkowitz was arrested in August 1977 and he confessed to killing 6 people and wounding 7. The really weird thing about this serial killer, is that he claims he was given commands to kill, by a demon which had possessed his neighbours dog.

Berkowitz later changed his confession claiming he only killed 3 people and wounded one. He stated that the other killings were committed by members of a satanic cult, of which he was a member. Many members of the original investigating team agree with this latter confession, as they felt more then one person committed the murders.

Most killings followed a pattern, where victims were shot in pairs, in their vehicles, usually late at night or early morning. There were other shootings that did not fit this pattern, but these have been credited to Berkowitz. On May the 30th 1977, New York Daily News columnist Jimmy Breslin received a hand written letter, from someone claiming to be the .44 Killer. The police were notified and a week later parts of the letter were published in the Daily News. Reports at the time say that over 1.1 million copies of the paper were sold that day. The letter caused a panic in New York and as all of the victims had long dark hair, thousands of women in New York had their hair cut or dyed and there was huge demand for blonde wigs. Also it was one of the hottest summers on record in New York, but people were so terrified, they chose to suffer the heat by staying indoors.

On July 31st 1977 Berkowitz was seen by a witness in the neighbourhood, where the shooting of Stacy Moskowitz and Robert Violente took place. She told police Berkowitz was acting suspicious and had removed a parking ticket from his Yellow Ford Galaxie. She notified police and this eventually led them to Berkowitz. Police arrested Berkowitz as he emerged from his apartment, carrying a .44 Bulldog in a paper bag, shortly before 10pm, August the 10th 1977. The first chilling words upon his arrest "You got me. What took you so long?" On June the 12th 1978 David Berkowitz "Son of Sam" was sentenced to 6 life sentences. He currently serves his time at the Sullivan Correctional Faciltiy in Fallsburg New York. You can visit his very own website arisenadshine.org on which he refers to himself, not as Son of Sam, but Son of Hope and has a complete apology!.....Read More On David Berkowitz Son Of Sam
