Serial Killers | Karl Denke

Cannibal Karl Denke

Here lies the mysterious German cannibal Karl Denke. There is not alot known about this serial killer. He was born August the 12th 1870 in The Kingdom of Prussia Germany. Today it is known as Ziebice Poland.

There are not many accounts of his childhood but we do know that in later years, he was well respected around town. Some used to refer to him as father Denke. Karl was also the organ blower at the local church.

After the 21st of December 1924, locals would have been looking at Karl Denke in a whole new light. On this particular night a coachman heard human cries coming from Karl Denke's room. The victim was being attacked with an axe by Denke.

He managed to escape from Karl Denke and told police of the attack. The police raided Denke's dwelling and what they found shocked them beyond belief.

There were big jars in his kitchen full of human meat, being pickled in brine. They found human bones and tubs of human fat. There were bits of human skin, ready to be fashioned into belts and such. Karl Denke even made shoe laces from human hair and sold them door to door.

As well as finding blood stained clothes, the police also discovered a journal and it is claimed that there were descriptions, of as many as 40 victims who Karl Denke had killed. In the book were names, dates and the weights of the people he had pickled.

These journal entries dated back to 1921. He also had identification and clothing from at least a dozen male victims. Karl Denke was arrested that night and hung himself on the 22nd of December, with a hankerchief in his cell.

He does have a display at the Ziebice museum that features his bloody axe and knives. It is also said that Karl Denke even sold his human flesh at the local Breslau market, known today as the Wroclaw Market.
